Warming the body during postpartum can be done in so many different ways. Some mommas love using spices in their foods like turmeric, ginger and cumin. Other mommas like to use temperature like warm soups, steamy tea and hot stews. And there are the majority of mommas that do a blend of both to bring healing to their body.

Spiced Coconut Bison Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground bison meat

  • 1 flax egg

  • 1/2 coconut or almond flour

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

  • 1 can 13.5 fl. oz -unsweetened coconut milk

  • 1 can 28 oz tomato diced

  • 1/2 cup arrowroot flour

  • 2 tbsp garlic powder

  • 1 stick cinnamon

  • 1 anise star

  • 1 tsp curry powder

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tbsp tomato paste

  • 3 tbsp Greek yogurt

  • Sea salt to taste

Place 1 tbsp of coconut oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Stir the cinnamon stick, anise star and cumin seeds. Also add the curry powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and tomato paste. Sautè mixture for around 5 minutes until fragrant then add salt to taste. Turn off heat. In a large bowl, place ground bison meat, Greek yogurt and half of the spice mixture previously sautéed. Create a flax egg (3 tbsp water + 1 tbsp flax seed. Cover the bowl and place in the fridge for 30 minutes. While waiting for the meatballs to rest, add coconut milk and diced tomatoes into spice mixture in the large sauté pan. Cook for 30-45 minutes on simmer and add sea salt as needed. Once ready, take the bowl out from the fridge and shape the bison mixture into balls and flour them with arrowroot powder. Add coconut oil into another cooking pan over medium heat. Brown each side of the meatballs then turn off heat. Place meatballs into the simmering spiced coconut tomato mixture. Bring to boil then cover pan with lid to simmer for 45 minutes. Make sure to pour the mixture over the meatballs every 10 minutes to make sure they cook evenly.
