How to Prepare for your Cesarean and Recovery
How to Prepare for a Cesarean 🥹
As you prepare for your cesarean, there are some essentials to include in your plan. I love empowering families everyday that they can have a thriving healing postpartum journey no matter the kind of birth they have.
Let’s get into my favorite tips and as always my full class on what to expect, how to prepare and heal after a c-section is included in my newest module over on The Postpartum Course: Heal, Nourish, Cocoon. Did you know my course is updated monthly with new modules? This virtual course allows for refreshed and updated content that is ever growing and changing as you prepare for your first, second and third postpartum journeys.
Pack a birth bag of snacks and cozy - this can look like healing items, nourishing foods and cocooning cozy elements. Healing items can look like a comforting belly binder like my handmade bengkung binders and the most comforting rice heat pad. Looking for a birth bag guide - download my free guide today.
Double batch stewed fruits for digestion - making batches of stewed fruits and bringing them to the hospital will support your after birth digestion. In order for you to be cleared to go home after birth you will be encouraged to have one bowel movement. Stewed fruits contain fiber and enzymes that can support your first bowel movement without pain. Check out this simple recipe here and my famous recipe in my cookbook The Postpartum Recipe Book: Heal, Nourish, Cocoon.
Create a healing bedside table with all your things close by - having your most essential items close to your bed will be so important. I can’t express enough how having a few bottles of spring water, your tea thermos and snacks close by will be such a game changer. If you are looking for more tips check out my Nesting Basket Guide on my YouTube for all the tips and tricks. I also created some great shopping lists for you to get your nesting baskets created - especially the bedside basket. Another blog post was recently created with even more tips and tricks for your nesting baskets - enjoy!
Gather friends and family members for the most help from 1-3 weeks postpartum - these three weeks after birth can be the most impactful and exhausting while you are recovering. Aim to have a family member or friend visit 1-2 times per day including meals + snacks. While it might seem excessive, you still need 8-10 hours of rest to recover. That can look like 5-6 during the night with feedings and multiple naps during the day. Plan for more and most often you will find the sweetest spot for healing. Unable to have family support? Reach out to a doula like myself for my healing care until you are recovered.
Massage your scar when it feels good and ready - I have a full guide on scar massage and recovery. Feel free to check it out here. I only encourage massage once you are past 3 weeks postpartum + approved by your doctor + absolutely no symptoms such as redness, rash, fever and bleeding of incision. The approval of your doctor is necessary to start any scar care.
