How to Create a Postpartum Cocoon

Hello friends,

I wanted to share a topic that is near and dear to my heart - cocooning. We often think of the cooler months of the year as being the coziest. What could be cozier than warm breathable wool clothing, knitted socks, your favorite woven blanket and a bowl of soup made with love and intention. I have always tried to live seasonally and I know it makes a difference. Did you know that postpartum is a cooler state for the body similar to the seasons of fall and winter? I love to share this with my momma clients - our bodies crave warmth during this time to support blood loss, circulation and balancing hormones. If the idea of cocooning during postpartum sounds romantic to you, this article is for you.

🕯️What does it mean to cocoon?

Over many years of being a doula I’ve observed how cozy elements really help mommas feel more grounded. Healing is possible when we fold in cozy details that invite us to rest. Some mommas choose to swaddle their babies, making them feel held and supported. The same is true with mommas, if we “cocoon” them, in a sense, they can feel held and supported. To cocoon during postpartum means to prepare cozy elements that will invite healing, rest, and comfort.
