🍜🏡❄️🕯️what to REALLY expect after birth

Hello friends,

There is so much information out there about what to expect during birth and how to support your body best. But over the years I have found there is very little wisdom shared around postpartum recovery and what to expect. While my course covers everything you will need to prepare for postpartum, I wanted to share some simple ways to prepare.

These are a few of my favorite tips ⬇️

❄️sleep will look like a puzzle of cat naps, early bedtimes and late wake up times

🕯️While we often want to prepare for every single detail, sleep is a very tricky thing. While feeding and soothing baby is an on demand kind of care, when there are pockets to rest some mommas find it impossible. The small windows of rest for baby often times can be the only time mommas are able to do what they need to do. Some of my favorite tips around sleep is to find a time around 5-8pm to make your bedtime start. Having an early bedtime can insure that you will get a longer stretch before the later hours of the evening. Tag team with your partner to get you a longer stretch in the early evening to support your body during the early morning hours. Naps can be ike pieces of a puzzle so view them as such. Schedule time to be cared for by a doula so you can rest when baby rests. Preparing for late wake up times can give you reassurance and allowance that it is completely normal. Mommas need rest for recovery, hormone support and so many other health reasons - make it your focus to prepare for healing rest!

❄️your baby will need you at all times and that is normal

🕯️Forget everything you have been told about feeding, burping and putting baby back into their own nursery as you go to rest for the next 3-4 hours on your own. Babies need their mommas! For the next however long needed, your baby will see you as nurturing, activity and nourishment. I have found as a doula that as soon as mommas are prepared for this on demand care, the sooner they can adjust their expectations. There is so much peace and rest knowing that you are the center of your baby’s world. But at the same time, now is the time to prepare so you can completely focus on your baby’s needs. Who will care for yours? Contact a doula for in person care and take my course to prepare you for recovery.

❄️you will meet some of your coziest new best friends

🕯️Simple cozy items like fluffy socks, warm soup, the best peri bottle and your favorite mug will be the bestest friends you will have in this season. Invest in some small but meaningful items that bring you joy and comfort. These little comforts truly make this time even more special and remind your future self of how much love and intention that was put into preparing for your postpartum.

❄️Wearing loungewear never felt so good

🕯️Get cozy! I say that about a million times a day because we have lost this valuable method to recovering after birth. Warm cozy materials and textures can keep you in the moment, help you stay present and safe. Feeling comfortable in your space and body will help you to recover. I love taking a few moments before birth to prep my momma client’s clothing options for postpartum. Simply take 2-3 outfits aside for postpartum and ask yourself if the items are made of breathable materials, in the correct comfortable size and do they make you feel loved and cared for? A quick buy of 2-3 sweat sets of a good cotton, cashmere or linen might be the best move! Plus higher quality materials mean they will need to be washed less and worn over many years.
