How to Heal Perineal Tears

Hello friends,

I have supported mommas for over 12 years and I have found that recovery looks different for every single momma. While I will share more in the future about how to prevent tearing, it does happen and I love offering healing tools for mommas. There is a range of different types of tears and that healing can look different depending on the specific type of tear. These are general tips that can benefit everyone. If you are wanting to prepare for possible perineal tears or recovering currently, these tips are for you!

These are a few of my favorite tips ⬇️

🤱🏼switch toilet paper for a peri bottle

🍂Swap out using any toilet paper for the first 6 weeks and use a healing peri bottle instead. Create a healing peri bottle herbal tea and keep extras in the fridge. Warm as needed and refill your peri bottle. Using the right shape peri bottle makes all the difference! I love stocking a basket of dark colored wash cloths for easy dabbing vs wiping. Simply launder these cloths  separately once a week.

🤱🏼rest with your coziest blanket long as possible

🍂Rest is going to be THE most vital healing tool. There is nothing else that will bring you healing then sleeping. Make sure to ask family and friends for extra support as you heal for the first six weeks at least. Resting with items like a cozy blanket and heat pad, will calm your nervous system and allow you to ground.

🤱🏽make your own frozen padsicles for the first 24 hours post birth

🍂Homemade padsicles will be your best friend for the first 24 hours. While I prefer heat pads to cold packs for postpartum, this will be the moment to use cold to support possible swelling. The body will become swollen and inflamed while recovering for the first 24-48 hours. I love using a gentle herbal blend of tea and soaking each pad into the tea then freeze. Super simple

🤱🏽a warm calendula sitz bath soak around day 2

🍂After a few days of using cold packs you will start to crave warmth. I love using the healing properties of calendula in a sitz bath form. A simple soak in a basin will allow the body to recenter and recover. Always make sure to check with your doctor before soaking depending on the stitches you may have.
